The Qinhuangdao 27-3 oilfield is located in the central and northern sea areas of the Bohai Sea, about 200 kilometers west of Tianjin City, with an average water depth of about 25 meters. The discovery well Qinhuangdao 27-3-3 encountered an oil layer of 48.9 meters, with a total drilling depth of 1570 meters. Tests show that the oilfield produces about 110 tons of crude oil per well per day, showing good exploration prospects.
"Under normal extraction, the Qinhuangdao 27-3 oilfield can produce nearly 20 million tons of crude oil. After refining into gasoline, it can meet the daily transportation needs of a city with a population of one million for more than 10 years. The asphalt produced can pave over 100,000 kilometers of four-lane highways, equivalent to circling the earth more than three times," said Zhou Jiaxiong, Deputy General Manager of the Limited Tianjin Branch.

The discovery of the Qinhuangdao 27-3 oilfield is another important practice of shallow lithologic exploration ideas in the Bohai Sea. The Shijiu Tuo Uplift, where it is located, was one of the main battlefields for early exploration of Bohai oilfields. Researchers used structural exploration ideas to find structural trap highs for well deployment and discovered three medium to large oilfields including Qinhuangdao 32-6 in the high areas. However, since 2011, drilling in the advantageous high areas has been exhausted, and the oil and gas enrichment patterns in the low areas remain unclear. Multiple rounds of structural exploration have not yielded ideal results.

To break the exploration deadlock, researchers from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) drew on the successful experience of billion-ton lithologic oilfield discoveries at Kenli 6-1 and Kenli 10-2, gradually shifting exploration ideas from traditional structural exploration to lithologic exploration. Combining a large amount of drilled data and experiments, researchers successfully proved that the low parts of the uplift also have the capacity to store oil and gas, changing traditional understanding. Ultimately, through solid sedimentary and geochemical fundamental research, they locked in the complex strike-slip fault zone of oil and gas enrichment in Shijiu Tuo, achieving a major new billion-ton oilfield discovery in the old exploration area.

Xu Changgui, Deputy Chief Geologist of CNOOC Exploration, stated that the Qinhuangdao 27-3 oilfield is another billion-ton oilfield in the central and northern Bohai Sea after 10 years, and also the sixth consecutive billion-ton oilfield discovered in the Bohai Sea since 2019. The successful discovery of this oilfield further confirms the broad oil and gas exploration prospects of the complex strike-slip fault zone in the Bohai Sea, injecting strong momentum into the development of offshore oilfields in our country. It is of great significance for securing our country's energy supply and supporting the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
