Conference Announcement | International Youth Scientists' Innovation Summit on Underground Gas Storage and Energy Reserves
Release Time:
2025-11-10
The "International Young Scientists' Innovation Summit on Underground Gas Storage and Energy Reserves" was held in Wuhan from November 14 to 16, 2025.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, with the intensifying global climate change and the urgent need for a transition in energy systems, underground gas storage and underground energy-storage technologies have gradually emerged as crucial tools to address these challenges. These technologies play a pivotal role in today’s energy landscape, offering flexibility in harnessing renewable energy sources and significantly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, thereby supporting the transition toward a low-carbon economy. At the same time, this field also faces substantial challenges. In the high-pressure, high-temperature, and highly corrosive environments typical of CO₂ geological utilization and storage projects, underground rock formations endure concurrent stress fields and acid-induced corrosion. Moreover, two-phase fluid systems—comprising CO₂ and brine—are simultaneously present within the rock’s pore spaces, making the evolution of the rock’s mechanical strength and poropermeability characteristics an intricate interplay of physical and chemical processes. Similarly, in underground hydrogen storage and energy-storage projects, the flow behavior of gases within reservoirs involves multi-scale phenomena governed by the coupled effects of stress fields, chemical environments, and other interacting factors. Meanwhile, the corrosion resistance and stability of caprock formations and wellbore materials are critical determinants influencing the overall safety and reliability of underground gas and energy storage systems. Given these opportunities and challenges in underground gas storage and energy storage, conducting research and fostering discussions on this topic is not only essential for advancing and refining theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and technological approaches in geomechanics and engineering but also vital for meeting national strategic goals such as achieving carbon neutrality and driving the transformation of our energy systems. To this end, we propose organizing the "International Young Scientists Innovation Summit on Underground Gas Storage and Energy Reserve," aligning with both pressing national priorities and cutting-edge developments in geomechanics and engineering. This summit aims to catalyze interdisciplinary collaboration among fields like geomechanics, engineering, seepage mechanics, geochemistry, environmental science, and engineering, ultimately propelling further progress in research related to underground gas storage and energy storage technologies.
