This milestone underscores the maturity of China's offshore CO2 storage technology, equipment, and engineering capabilities, and highlights its critical role in accelerating the nation's progress toward its "dual carbon" goals while driving a green and low-carbon transformation of the economy and society.
The Enping 15-1 oilfield, China's first high-carbon-dioxide-containing oilfield in the eastern South China Sea, would see carbon dioxide produced alongside crude oil if developed under conventional methods. This not only poses a risk of corrosion to offshore platform facilities and subsea pipelines but also leads to increased CO₂ emissions—clearly contradicting the concept of green development.
After four years of research, CNOOC has taken the lead in launching China's first offshore CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) project at this oilfield, achieving an annual carbon dioxide storage capacity of over 100,000 tons. In May of this year, China's first offshore CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) project was put into operation on the platform of this oilfield, marking a comprehensive upgrade across the entire CCUS value chain—encompassing equipment, technology, and engineering. By leveraging advanced techniques, the project not only boosts crude oil production but also ensures long-term CO2 sequestration, pioneering a new model of marine energy circular utilization: "using carbon to drive oil recovery, while simultaneously locking carbon in the reservoir." Over the next decade, the oilfield is expected to reinject more than 1 million tons of CO2, further boosting crude oil output by up to 200,000 tons.
Xu Xiaohu, Deputy General Manager of Enping Operation Company, Shenzhen Branch of CNOOC, stated: "Since the project was officially put into operation, it has maintained safe and stable performance for over 15,000 hours, with peak daily gas injection reaching 210,000 cubic meters. By adopting an innovative model that seamlessly integrates ecological protection with energy development, the project has paved a replicable and scalable new pathway for green, low-carbon development in China's offshore oil and gas fields. It has also become a significant practical achievement in advancing China's efforts toward peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality."
