On June 6, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced a major breakthrough in the exploration of ultra-deepwater ultra-shallow gas layers in the western South China Sea.

According to reports, the Lingshui 36-1 gas field is located in the western South China Sea, with an average water depth of about 1,500 meters. The main gas-bearing formation is the Quaternary Ledong Group reservoir, with an average gas layer burial depth of 210 meters. The exploration well test showed an unobstructed natural gas flow exceeding 10 million cubic meters per day.

Xu Changgui, Deputy Chief Geologist of CNOOC Exploration, stated that the exploration of ultra-deepwater ultra-shallow gas layers in the South China Sea faces many world-class engineering and technical challenges. The successful test of the Lingshui 36-1 gas field marks a major breakthrough in this field. Subsequently, CNOOC will continue to carry out key technological research and development for ultra-shallow reservoir exploration and development, contributing to the utilization of new natural gas resources and accelerating the exploration and development of deep-sea oil and gas resources.
